What to Look for in a Preschool Curriculum

Preschool curriculums may vary but they all strive to enhance a child’s social, intellectual, emotional, and cognitive development. Brookline preschools and childcare services in Brookline preschool and childcare settings are no exception.

One of the most important features of a preschool curriculum at a childcare center in Brookline and in other communities is that it is age appropriate, as well as developmentally appropriate. This is important because parents, caregivers, and experts know that children learn differently at different ages. Preschoolers for instance learn best by interacting with others through play, both creative and structured, through hands on exploration, and by example. It’s up to teachers and staff members to the curriculum they feel is best suited to the learning philosophy of the preschool or Brookline daycare facilities they teach at.

A typical, but generalized preschool curriculum at a Brookline childcare center, or even in a Brookline family childcare setting, will include an understanding of sizes, shapes, and colors, recognizing patterns and sequences, preparation for reading readiness through activities that increase language skills such as reading stories, drawing pictures and telling stories, and writing names, the alphabet, and simple words, working with numbers and perhaps learning how to tell time in preparation for math, and conducting “science experiments” through observation of cause and affect.
